Linda Matthews has never fitted in, never followed the crowd. She goes to business networking meetings and gets quizzical looks when she says she is an Artist, she can see the unasked question “What is an Artist doing at a business networking meeting?”; answer she conducts Corporate Days, ‘Teach your Staff to Relax Through Paint’ designs stationery and paints commissions. When joining artist’s groups she has been told she is too business minded to be an Artist!!So she just gets on with her passion producing her own artwork, inspiring others to take up the brush through her tuition and painting holidays and then there’s running the business.
April 2010 is the tenth anniversary of Linda becoming self employed. The first tentative exposure of her work was at the Eastern Events Craft Fair at Blickling Hall Easter April 2000. At the time Linda was so proud of her stand, she now looks back and cringes, “It looked so amateurish.” She say’s. Yet this launched her into a world she had never dreamed of being part of. Her first two years were spent working from home, selling at professional fairs around the country and exhibiting around the county. Two of her first commissions were for a Christmas card, for the chief executive of North Norfolk Council and a painting of Cromer Pier, a retirement present to Robert Marlow, director of Seaside Special for twentytwo years, from the people of Cromer. Many others have followed since both private and corporate.
Linda had a studio at Alby Crafts, near Aylsham, for four years, where she expanded her stationery and giftware range. It was here she began teaching and conducting painting holidays, during this time she was the North Norfolk co-ordinator for the Norfolk Open Studio scheme, appeared on “Coastal Inspirations” on Anglia Television. She also found she had an aptitude for marketing her own work and that of the other makers. Linda thrives on the business side of her work, and has conducted, for the County Council, marketing seminars for other artists, along with seminars for artists thinking of setting up their own courses.
At Alby Linda saw her business grow, living in The Broads area she felt she was not involved enough in her local area, hence her move to her present Studio at Ludham Bridge, by the River Ant. “Many thought me mad moving to The Broads area” say’s Linda, but the tourist market is changing, showing there is more to the Broads than just boats and bird watching, I promote our wonderful county where ever I go and am a member of the Broads Tourism Business Forum.
Linda’s teaching reputation has grown nationally in the last few years, she has written articles for Leisure Painter Magazine, demonstrates regularly for Chroma Atelier Acrylics, travelling the country and conducting her own courses in Norfolk and holidays in France and Italy. Last year her work was accepted for an exhibition at the Designer and Artists Copyright Society in London, she also painted on Radio Norfolk, yes painting on the radio, and got David Clayton the Station manager to paint Pudsey for Children in Need on stage at the Norwich Playhouse.
Linda said, “ I cannot imagine a life without painting, another artist said to me that it is a way of life. He was right, you may not become rich financially, but life is a lot richer”
Linda’s work is on permanent display at her studio year round and from 15 March she has an exhibition at No 28 High Street Holt for six weeks.
